Smart Parks & Rompa: A cooperation to protect wildlife

We are happy to announce our partnership with Smart Parks. It’s time to protect our wildlife around the globe with modern and smart technology. Rompa will help to design and produce the next version of wildlife collars and asset trackers for Smart Parks so they are able to trace, observe and protect wildlife.

Smart Parks

This organization is dedicated to protecting endangered species and conserving the environment. They aim to achieve this by using services and technologies of collaborative partners with a similar point of view and ethical standards. Smart Parks is very much interested in technology and innovation, but their biggest passion and most important goal is to protect wildlife in countries such as Africa, India and many more! Most of their work is being done in National Parks. Most of these parks are very remote and therefore do not have 3G or 4G internet coverage. With the sensors distributed across the park, Park Management can get a better understanding of what is happening. Smart Parks sensor data is visualised in an easy-to-use web application like Earth Ranger. The application collects real-time information about the locations of animals and other relevant events. This process is called Situational Awareness and is a modern way of wildlife conservation. Make sure to check out their current projects!

The cooperation

Rompa will help to design and produce the next version of the Lion collar and Asset tracker. Both current versions are listed in the catalog of Smart Parks. For the past years, Smart Parks in collaboration with their partner IRNAS, has been innovating these trackers and has not made the step towards higher volume production yet, to ensure no outdated stock build-up took place. With the help of Rompa, now is the time to re-design the enclosures so these sensors are ready for the next level. Due to continued innovations Smart Parks does not keep items in stock, which means production takes place on demand. This way of producing poses no problem for Rompa’s facility in China. With, for example, the use of our SMED method, production processes can be switched very rapidly, and delivery times are no longer then 1 to 3 months from Smart Parks to their clients.

So, what are the benefits of this new design?

  • More easy to produce and assemble
  • Better antenna performance
  • Suitable for multiple animals
  • Durable BioThane belting, made from polyester webbing with a TPU or PVC coating making it more durable, waterproof, easy to clean and weldableContains different modules for many configurations, which offer a variety of uses suitable for a wide range of cases
Another great benefit of these sensors worth mentioning separately, is the fact that this is part of the OpenCollar initiative, making it an open-source product. This means that the design is available to everybody and we would be happy to see others copying the design and starting production, because in the end, we all want those animals protected worldwide! We are very happy to start this collaboration as both Smart Parks and Rompa have the same vision of improving technology, and all this for a great purpose!

Sustainability and innovation

Rompa’s aims to simplify the production processes for the products of Smart Parks. A simple production process means saving costs, in return Smart Parks can offer their products at a lower price. Offering these products at a lower price means that more animals can be protected! The products become accessible and within budget of national parks around the world. Besides helping to create an easier production process, Rompa will also look at sizes, weights and materials used. Imagine a lightweight and small traceable collar. This means that these animals will be less affected by wearing these collars. And of course, Rompa will use ecofriendly technologies and sustainable materials to improve the collar for Smart Parks.
